Hong Kong Special Olympics for the mentally handicapped was launched by a group of dedicated professionals servicing in the field of related beneficiaries. The first event of the Hong Kong Special Olympics was held in December 1975 at Aberdeen Sports Ground, at that time only 500 people attended the one-day track and field events. After 30 years of development, has now evolved into a wide range of sports activities throughout the year, the number of participants is more than 40,000 people. Thousands of athletes and participants from nearly 100 member agencies throughout the year organized sports, namely athletics, badminton, basketball, bowling, football, golf, gymnastics, skating, rowing, swimming, ping-pong and volleyball, etc.

The organization strives to develop the various Olympic types of sports activities for people with 8 years old or older intellectual disabilities to participate, let them develop their potential through long-term training, self-confidence and courage, to share with family and peers obtained from movement of the joy, then integrate into the community.
