Volunteer Project Coordinators
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Volunteer Project Coordinator? Project Coordinators are volunteers who make a commitment to help manage a volunteer activity for a few hours each week or month (depending on the project).
What does a Volunteer Project Coordinator do? Volunteer Project Coordinators help sign-up and manage volunteers, attend the activity to ensure everything goes smoothly, report attendance, and provide feedback to HOHK following the activity.
How much time does it take to be a Volunteer Project Coordinator? While this will depend on the volunteer activity, Volunteer Project Coordinators may spend a few minutes before the activity to prepare for the session. On the day of the activity, Volunteer Project Coordinators show up 10-15 minutes early to meet volunteers at the MTR or greet volunteers them at the charity. They also, take attendance, ensure that the charity is ready for the project, answer any questions during the activity, and thank volunteers at the end. After the activity, the Project Coordinator will spend a few minutes submitting volunteer attendance and the number of beneficiaries we helped.
What kind of commitment do I need to make as a Volunteer Project Coordinator? This will vary according to the type of activity you lead and the number of Coordinators already involved in that project. Most Coordinators commit to coordinating one or two activities per month. While we will try to be flexible as much as possible, we prefer that you make a six-month commitment as a Project Coordinator.
What qualifications do I need to become a Volunteer Project Coordinator? Anyone can be a great Project Coordinator, you just need to be accessible by e-mail and mobile phone, be committed to making a difference, and be comfortable leading a group of diverse volunteers. While it’s great if you have volunteer experience, it is not essential.
What are the benefits of being a Volunteer Project Coordinator? Volunteer Project Coordinators play a vital role to the functioning of HOHK and truly make a difference -- HOHK volunteer activities simply cannot take place without them! Becoming a Project Coordinator is also a terrific
way to meet new people, learn more about the issues affecting Hong Kong, and develop leadership skills.
What support will I get from HOHK? Before you begin leading an activity, HOHK will provide you with background information specific to the volunteer activity you will be leading. You will also be able to attend the volunteer activity with a current Coordinator to see first-hand what’s involved in the role before you begin leading the activity on your own. Once you begin leading your activity, HOHK will provide ongoing support, whether through phone calls, email, or in person. HOHK is committed to ensuring all Project Coordinators receive the tools and resources they need.
How do Volunteer Project Coordinators get matched up with projects? We will work with you to find a suitable project based on your skills, interests, and availability. Sometimes a project will be available right away, on other occasions, it may take more time. While we try to match Volunteer Project Coordinators to projects that fit their interests and availability as best as we can, we also ask people to be flexible and enthusiastic about filling in where we have the greatest need.
Currently, we are looking for individuals interested in helping coordinate some of our regular and one-off volunteer activities. In particular, we are looking for coordinators who can commit to at least one activity per month. Our volunteer activities take place on weekends, as well as during the week, making it easy for just about anyone to become a coordinator.
I’m interested. What are the next steps? Start volunteering! If you haven’t already volunteered before with Hands On Hong Kong, we suggest you volunteer once or twice on an activity (or activities) that you are interested in coordinating. At the activity, feel free to ask the Volunteer Project Coordinator any questions you may have about the role. Then, if you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Project Coordinator, please email us at hohk@handsonhongkong.org
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Hands On Hong Kong Volunteer Project Coordinator!
