Youth opportunity: Help at Food Station in Lai Chi Kok

Description: Food Angel is a food rescue and food assistance program with the mission of "Waste Not, Hunger Not, With Love". The program rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Following strict safety protocols, the rescued food items will then be prepared as nutritious hot meals in their central kitchens and be redistributed to serve the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. In this activity, volunteers will be helping prepare and sort the raw vegetables at the Food Station only, e.g. cutting away the yellowish parts, which will be transferred to the kitchens for cooking on another day. If you want to prepare food ingredients and meal boxes, or help serve hot meals to beneficiaries in the Central Kitchens, please enrol directly on Food Angel Website. COVID-19 Relief: Distributing Care Packages for isolating elderly in Tai Po

The program is made possible through a generous donation from the Macquarie Group Foundation. Description: With most of Hong Kong’s elderly self-isolating, afraid and unable to leave their homes, help from the city’s volunteers is desperately needed to support their immediate needs and well-being. Assistance from volunteers also reduces the burden on stretched and under-resourced elderly centres acting as a virtual lifeline for the people they support. ​ Volunteer roles: ​​ Volunteers will receive a short briefing and protective gear (masks, gloves, and hand sanitizers) upon arriving at the centre. Volunteers will help to sort and assemble Care Package items including essential food and hygiene items. Volunteers will then form a team of two to deliver care packages directly to the doorsteps of families waiting to receive them. Please be aware of the service involves heavy lifting. COVID-19 Relief: Distributing Care Packages for refugees and asylum seekers

The program is made possible through a generous donation from the Macquarie Group Foundation. Description: There are almost 13,000 asylum seekers in Hong Kong who are unable to work and earn a decent income to fulfill their basic needs. They were struggling to make ends meet even before this pandemic. Now, with many of them living in fear and having their livelihoods impacted, they are in more dire need than ever. Part of the burden on Hong Kong’s refugees and asylum seekers (and the organisations acting as their lifeline), can be eased through the delivery of relief Care Packages brought directly to their doorsteps by caring volunteers. Each pack will last a household for one week. Volunteer roles: ​ Volunteers will receive a short briefing and protective gear (masks, gloves, and hand sanitizers) upon arriving at the community centre. Volunteers will help to sort and assemble Care Package items including essential food and hygiene items and other necessities. Volunteers will then support centre staff by taking vans to other areas (e.g. To Kwa Wan, Yau Tsim Mong, Hung Hom) and deliver care packages to the recipients' households. Virtual storytelling Support for hearing-impaired children (English)

Each volunteer joining this support-program must have attended our May 30th training session and be available to participate for three consecutive weeks, by leading one storytelling session every Saturday from June 6th to 20th. In order to join this program volunteers must sign-up for all of the three-week slots below. A Zoom link will for each session will be shared by HandsOn one day before. Confirmed participants will be invited to attend a 30-minute session providing Zoom tips for this program on Thursday June 4th at 6pm. Volunteer roles: Two volunteers will be paired up and host a storytelling session for three to four children with hearing-imparied once per week. They will provide social connection and empower these children with confidence in English, as they begin to return to school in the next month. Each volunteer will operate in a pair—storyteller and facilitator Each pair supports 3-4 children Children will be encouraged to speak English (each pair will have a Cantonese speaker to provide support) Volunteers have access to 25 scanned books for their usage Some pre-coordination between volunteer pairs will be needed All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong.

Youth Opportunity: Help out at a homing day for abandoned dogs

Description: Hong Kong Paw's mission is to raise awareness of animal welfare and to reduce the number of animals that are stray, abused and abandoned. This homing event aims to help the dogs find adopters and foster families. Volunteers are expected to provide general assistance, including helping with setting up the area for homing events, holding dogs who are on a leash, cleaning up and chatting with potential fosters and adopters. Hong Kong Paws Foundation hosts regular homing events every Saturday at Discovery Bay South Plaza, along with other locations on an occasional basis. Direction: Volunteers who live in Discovery Bay area are asked to gather at the front of the Post Office at 2 pm. Description: At this event you will help to prepare soap donated by hotels for recycling and distribution to underprivileged families and schools in disadvantaged communities around the world, particularly in Asia. Your help in the recycling of soaps from hotels in Hong Kong also promotes environmental protection. Volunteers will help with sorting, carving and recycling soap. Bring a reusable bag to carry the items to hand out. Parental guidance is required for volunteers under the age of 18. We do not suggest this walk for children under 10. All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you on this activity, they must first register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity. Remarks: Volunteers who age below 18 years old and above 10 years old want to join this service, a guardian should sign up to this activity.
