Help Primary & Secondary School Kids of Hong Kong's Refugees & Asylum Seekers
Description:Volunteers help a group of primary & secondary school students (aged 6-18 years old, ~25-35 students) with refugee or asylum backgrounds with their school work. Most of them need support in Cantonese, English, Mathematics and General Studies. Another important aspect of the homework group is not just helping them with arithmetic, reading, dictation etc. but also in building their confidence. The school environment can be quite challenging with a lot of homework given and a lot of the time, not enough individual attention can be given to them at school. So they deserve and need adults to work through school issues with them patiently as well as build on their strengths. Sometimes all they need are some words of encouragement and for them to believe in their abilities to tackle something challenging to them. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who are able to give a commitment on a weekly basis to get out the most benefit for the kids. The homework support is held weekly on Saturday from 10.30am to 12.00pm. Refugees and asylum seekers are a marginalized group in Hong Kong as they are unable to work and gain a decent income to service their basic needs. They also live in a constant state of insecurity as their asylum status can take up to years to be verified. The Centre of Refugees provides valuable support through services like free meas and non-emergency medical care. Language: English Speakers & Cantonese speakers who know how to write traditional Chinese All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you on this activity, they must first register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity. Remarks: 1. Volunteers must attend the "Meet & Greet" session first. 2. For new volunteers: "Meet & Greet" sessions will be hosted regularly the first Sat per month. Please feel free to sign up and join the service programs after it.
