Help Sort through Second-hand Clothing with Environmental NGO Redress
Description: Did you know, every day Hongkongers throw 343 tonnes of textiles into landfill, most of which is recyclable. In fact, globally, only 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled back into new clothes at the end of its use. Redress is a pioneering Hong Kong based NGO working to reduce textile waste and promote environmental sustainability in the fashion industry. We work with designers, brands, manufacturers, industry professionals, educational organisations and consumers in order to reduce textile waste and drive growth towards a circular economy for fashion, while directly benefitting 20+ local charities with clothing needs. Redress is looking for volunteers to help carefully sort through second-hand clothes collected through their consumer take-back programme in Hong Kong retail stores and help keep those clothes in the fashion loop for longer by redistributing them to multiple channels including a variety of local charities, re-sale, upcycling and recycling. Volunteers will receive a detailed briefing about Redress and the measures we are taking to help extend the life-cycle of our clothes. You will also be given further information on our charity beneficiaries and how to select clothing according to their specific requirements. Charities receiving donations include: Crossroads, Friends of the Earth, Christian Action, St James Settlement, Po Leung Kuk, Mother's Choice, Pathfinders, Impact HK, Suits for Success, J Life Foundation, Changing Young Lives Foundation, Asbury Methodist Church, Tung Wah Hospitals and Lizzie Bee. Top quality clothes will also be sold to raise funds for Redress, whilst the clothes that do not meet our charity beneficiary requirements will be kept for Redress’ new circular economy initiative and ultimately recycled into new yarns! You can be part of a local circular economy, learn about the real waste behind the fashion industry and make a difference.
