Help English Beginner of Hong Kong's Refugees & Asylum Seekers
Description: Volunteers help a group of refugee or asylum backgrounds to improve their English in this beginner and pre-intermediate class.
Refugees and asylum seekers are a marginalized group in Hong Kong as they are unable to work and gain a decent income to service their basic needs. They also live in a constant state of insecurity as their asylum status can take up to years to be verified. The Centre of Refugees provides valuable support through services like free meals and non-emergency medical care.
The aim of this program is to provide opportunities for students to develop the English language and coping skills which help them in their daily life as well as to navigate the asylum process in Hong Kong and to integrate when they are resettled in another country.
Sometimes all they need are some words of encouragement and for them to believe in their abilities to tackle something challenging to them. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who are able to give a commitment on a weekly basis to get out the most benefit for the kids.
All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you on this activity, they must first register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity.
