Training session: Virtual storytelling for hearing-impaired children (Bilingual)

This program is made possible with support from the HKEX Foundation

Description:  The closure of schools and shift to online learning during the COVID-19 crisis has left some students marginalized. Children with hearing impairments face challenges in hearing and understanding during online sessions with large class groups which can impact their self-esteem and confidence to speak.

Additional support is needed from the volunteer community to help empower these children with confidence in English, as they begin to return to school in the next month.

HandsOn Hong Kong is partnering with Bring Me A Book Hong Kong (BMABHK) and the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, to launch an English language virtual storytelling program for children with hearing impairments. These weekly sessions will connect caring volunteers with a small group of children (aged 5 to 9) to  instill a love of reading and boost their confidence in speaking English.

Volunteer roles:
Volunteers will form a pair and be assigned 3 - 4 children that they will support every Saturday for at least a three-week period, starting from June 6th at either 9:30am or 3:30pm (during a one hour Zoom session).

Online storytelling training: This training session be conducted through Zoom. The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf will be sharing tips for communicating with the children. Read-aloud training and story telling skills will be provided by BMABHK trainer Angie Lin.

Attending this information session is a prerequisite for joining this service program and will equip you to join future virtual storytelling opportunities with HandsOn.

This opportunity is for bilingual speakers (English and Cantonese).

All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you have any questions regarding this service, please directly email to hohk@handsonhongkong.org

如有任何查詢,請直接電郵至 hohk@handsonhongkong.org
