Serve-A-Thon: Help with sorting donated goods at Crossroads (Youth Welcome)
Description: Each year, more than five million tonnes of waste are dumped in Hong Kong’s landfills, some of which are high-quality, unwanted goods, despite having the potential to be reused. Volunteers will sort and pack a variety of donated goods (e.g. toys, household goods, clothing, and book) which will then be repurposed and given to the low-income households in Hong Kong or sent to developing countries in Asia for a second life. This program not only helps ease the burden of Hong Kong’s landfills and has a positive environmental impact, but will also help give essential items to people in need. Volunteer roles: The tasks vary according to what is most needed, but typically could include the following: • Sorting and packing donated goods e.g. toys, household goods, clothing, electrical goods, computers, books etc. • Heavy work e.g. moving furniture, preparing cartons for shipment, unloading donated goods off trucks etc. Get a good work out while helping the poor! • Site maintenance/care including painting, gardening, landscaping, maintenance. Remarks: This volunteer activity involves heavy lfting. Given the current COVID-19 situation, if there are any changes or cancellations regarding this event, we'll let you know ASAP by email and SMS. In response to COVID-19, volunteers should please bring and wear their own masks during service. Centre staff and volunteers will adopt HandsOn Hong Kong COVID-19 safety precautions in-line with Centre for Health Protection guidelines and in consultation with Médecins Sans Frontières. All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you on this activity, they must first register with Hands On and sign up for the activity.
