Regular Volunteer Activities 2014

Community Kitchen

Every Monday and Wednesday in October, HandsOn Hong Kong volunteers provided nutritious hot meal box packing services at St. James Settlement People's Food Bank's kitchen. The meals are for beneficiaries from low income backgrounds, such as the unemployed, families encountering sudden difficulties and street sleepers in Eastern and Western Kowloon. With the support of our volunteers, we help reduce food waste in our community and help serve 10,000 beneficiaries who are in need of food assistance.

Fun Day for Intellectually Challenged Students

Exercises challenging both mind and body were arranged for 27 children with intellectual disabilities, who are studying in the New Territories. Members of Kowloon Rugby Club and employees from Pinnacle Performance participated as volunteers to accompany these students. Through ball games and trampoline exercises, students were immersed in a unique environment enabling them to learn about hand-eye coordination and acquire fine motor skills. These challenging activities enabled the students to nurture their strength and stamina. Interactions between volunteers and students were invaluable in breaking barriers and building bridges between different walks of life.

Hot Soup Delivered to the Elderly by HOHK Volunteers!

Thanks to our enthusiastic volunteers who helped on 12 & 25 July to deliver hot Cantonese soup to the elderly. We sent warmth and love to over 60 households in both Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun by carrying out these home visits. We would also like to take the chance to thank the generous volunteers from Coutts who donated the funding to run this soup delivery project. The elderly all enjoyed the soup and chats with the volunteers.

Give & Gain Day 2014

Congratulations to the volunteers from Hong Kong companies who took part in Give & Gain Day on 16 May. For the fourth year running, Hong Kong was part of this international movement to drive employee volunteering. Volunteer events took place throughout the month, with 16 May being the nominated "Give & Gain Day" in the HKSAR.

We held two soap cycling sessions on that day, with Telstra and Grandtag Financial Group participating. Volunteers helped with sorting, carving and recycling soaps. The soaps are donated by hotels for recycling and distribution to underprivileged families and schools in disadvantaged communities around the world, particularly in Asia. At the moment the main recipients are victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The recycling of soaps from hotels in Hong Kong also promotes environmental protection in our city.

Two-days Macau Trip with Physically Disabled Teens

On 24 and 25 April, we organized the first HOHK overnight trip with a group of physically disabled teens from the HK Red Cross Princess Alexandra School. The trip was sponsored by the HOHK Drink For Good 2013 fundraising event. Thanks to our generous supporters, 10 deserving teens went on this trip, and for many of them it was the first time they have been to Macau. The trip had a special theme of “Career and Future Exploring” aimed at teens approaching graduation. The teens visited the University of Macau and the integrated services center in Taipa run by Sheng Kung Hui Macau. HOHK volunteers also helped as interviewers for mock job interviews and gave the teens helpful feedback. Macau may be quick and easy to visit for most of us, but for the teens, it was a precious opportunity to broaden their life experience that is only possible with the assistance of volunteers and funding from our supporters.

Thanks To All Volunteers Helping Us at the Ocean Park Trips!

On 14, 19 and 22 March, we have organized three daytrips to the Ocean Park for children with learning disabilities. Over the three days, around 70 volunteers participated to take care of 100 children and contributed to nearly 390 service hours. Thanks to the generosity of the donors at the Drink For Good 2013 event and the enthusiasm of the volunteers, we have created lovely and unforgettable memories with the children. We wish to have your continue support in our upcoming fundraising events which enable us to generate more valuable volunteering opportunities!
