NGO mission and description of organization’s work

Every 21 seconds. That’s how often Habitat for Humanity helped another family access new or improved housing somewhere around the world in 2019. For the fiscal year 2019, Habitat served more than 7 million people including 3.1 million people from Asia and the Pacific; and enlisted the support of more than 1.4 million volunteers. At Habitat for Humanity, we recognize that safe and decent housing plays a key role in lifting families out of poverty. Having a home represents a safe haven for a family, a strong and stable place where children can thrive, and a solid foundation on which a family can build a better life. Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities. Habitat for Humanity undertakes many types of work to improve housing around the world—from continuing our traditional work to build safe, decent and affordable homes in partnership with soon-to-be homeowners, to our innovative focus on financial inclusion, housing market systems and entrepreneurship, and to our groundbreaking development of microfinance for the housing sector.

In Hong Kong, we run several programmes to help low-income families and in particular the elderly living in public housing estates and retirement homes through essential renovation work or deep cleaning services. Project Home Works strives to provide more decent homes and convey hope to the community. We also work in schools in underserved areas in Hong Kong, recognizing that school is like a second home. On Project School Works, volunteers work alongside primary school students to paint murals in their schools, creating a warm and welcoming learning environment. Habitat Hong Kong is also a fundraising and volunteer recruitment hub for Asia and the Pacific region. Throughout the year, we raise funds to support our disaster resilience and home building projects in 18 countries across the Asia and the Pacific region including Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka and groups of volunteers travel to these locations to build disaster resilient houses alongside our home partners.

Impact of skills-based volunteer support on NGO and mission

Immense. We are experiencing extreme challenges and the impact of a data driven analysis of the fundraising work we do, and imparting knowledge on how to use data and market analysis to drive decisions, will build capacity with our team that will change the way they approach their conversations and every day decisions. The work of the Business Development Manager will be used by the CEO, Development Committee and the Board of Directors to make informed decisions.
