Collect Bread for the Homeless (Youth Welcome)
Description: Every day, 3,600 tonnes of food waste are sent to landfills in Hong Kong, while one in five people live in poverty and struggle to afford nutritious meals. Frontline charities are seeing a significant increase in the number of people turning to NGOs for food assistance due to the COVID-crisis. The Bread Donation Programme mobilizes volunteers to rescue surplus bread from bakeries around Hong Kong. Volunteers collect near closing and bring the donations to designated collection points every Friday. These bread donations are redistributed the same night to ImpactHk, the shelter for the homeless. Volunteers will need to sign up to the online platform Breadline with their google accounts. Guidelines on how to use the platform will be sent out by HandsOn on Wednesdays. You will be claiming runs and checking for real-time updates on the platform. Service area: Bakeries are located across Hong Kong island and Kowloon. You will be able to choose your runs based on your preferred locations and time but be prepared to travel, there are often more surpluses further out. Check-in on the platform 1hr before your run, real-time updates will show you how much bread is approximately available. Shops do sell out - so choose 2-3 stores during the service time to avoid disappointment! Service time: Bakeries close between 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Collection time is from 8:45pm to 10:00pm in Tin Hau. Volunteers will be there to welcome you with your haul. Service details and volunteer safety: All volunteers will receive a service reminder for this activity which must be followed exactly to ensure timely bread collection and handling guidelines are followed. Volunteers are reminded to adopt HandsOn Hong Kong COVID-19 safety precautions in-line with Centre for Health Protection guidelines.
