Generation Connect: Strategies and skills to support the elderly

Join a HandsOn training session, hear from specialists and discover how you and your family can connect with elderly communities with empathy and compassion.

After an unprecedented time, the mental health of Hong Kong’s elderly community continues to be at risk. More than 152,000 people over 65 years are living alone in the city. Coming out of the pandemic – after years of social distancing and family separations – over 50% of the elderly report feeling lonely.

At the other end of the spectrum, the emotional well-being of our own children and families has been in crisis. Young people are finding their way in the new normal and are learning to reconnect meaningfully with others around them.

Generation Connect

With the support of the Hong Kong Club Foundation, HandsOn Hong Kong has developed a service program that supports the emotional well-being of both the city's elderly and Hong Kong families. GENERATION CONNECT empowers and connects these groups that brings social connection, joy, and friendship to everyone involved.

In this one-off training session, HandsOn friends are invited to hear from our expert training partner, MightyOaks, who will equip you with the skills and strategies to communicate with and support the elderly and empower your child to do so with you.

You will learn about the challenges our older population are facing, furthering your respect and compassion to care for those isolated elderly. Our city’s lovable older community are an extremely capable, enthusiastic and vibrant group of people who have stories to tell and love to give. Strong communication skills and respect for our elders are wonderful to have not only as a volunteer, but are highly transferable at school and of course at home.

At the event you can chat to the HandsOn team and discover more about our Generation Connect program. We’ll help you explore this special program and find out more about your son or daughter becoming a buddy to an older person for 3-4 months.

Please note that the session will be hosted in Cantonese; only Cantonese speakers are able to join Generation Connect as a buddy.

You can also contact us directly at HOHK@handsonhongkong.org/2481 8092/Whatsapp 9851 6782

This session will still go ahead no matter what weather conditions.
